An essential oil can contain around 100 different types of volatile molecules. Some of these have been classified into larger functional groups that have predictable characteristics. The main groups are monoterpenes, sesquiterpenes, phenols, alcohols, ketones, esters, ethers, and oxides. Classifying essential oils into these chemical groups allows understanding of the basic properties and actions of individual oils.
Ketones
Oils in this family are infrequently used. They can be neurotoxic and can have serious side effects. When carefully diluted and used in moderation, however, they can calm, dissolve mucus and fats, promote wound healing, and provide antifungal benefits. Tansy, wormwood, and sage are three essential oils high in the toxic ketone thujone. Nontoxic ketones are found in jasmine and fennel.
Aphrodisiac
A substance that arouses sexual desire.
Cicatrizing
Scar formation at the site of healing wound.
Galactagogue
An agent that promotes the production of milk.

Essential oils can be a great addition to a balanced natural health program. Here are some ways you can incorporate them:
Diffuse Essential Oils: Add a few drops of your favorite essential oil to a diffuser filled with water. This can help create a calming atmosphere and promote relaxation.
Topical Application: Apply a few drops of essential oil directly to your skin. Always dilute the essential oil with a carrier oil to avoid skin irritation.
Aromatherapy Massage: Combine essential oils with a carrier oil for a therapeutic massage. This can help alleviate stress and promote relaxation
Add to Bath: Add essential oils to your bath for a relaxing and therapeutic experience
Add to Body Lotions: Mix essential oils with your body lotion for massage or topical application
Use in Compresses: Apply hot or cold compresses with a few drops of essential oil
Make a Clay Mask: Essential oils can be added to a clay mask for a rejuvenating skincare routine
Remember, each essential oil has unique properties and benefits. For instance, lavender can help with relaxation and sleep, while eucalyptus and peppermint can boost your bodily health. Always do a patch test to ensure you don’t have an allergic reaction to the oil, and consult with a healthcare professional if you’re pregnant, nursing, or have any health conditions.
Holistic health care takes into account your body, mind, and spirit2. So, consider how these aspects coalesce as they significantly affect your health outcomes and overall well-being. Essential oils can be a tool to support this journey towards optimal wellness
