Bronchitis is an inflammation of the lining of your bronchial tubes, which carry air to and from your lungs. People who have bronchitis often cough up thickened mucus, which can be discolored. Bronchitis may be either acute or chronic.

Often developing from a cold or other respiratory infection, acute bronchitis is very common. Chronic bronchitis, a more serious condition, is a constant irritation or inflammation of the lining of the bronchial tubes, often due to smoking.

Acute bronchitis, also called a chest cold, usually improves within a week to 10 days without lasting effects, although the cough may linger for weeks. (1)

Asthma is a condition in which your airways narrow and swell and may produce extra mucus. This can make breathing difficult and trigger coughing, a whistling sound (wheezing) when you breathe out and shortness of breath.

For some people, asthma is a minor nuisance. For others, it can be a major problem that interferes with daily activities and may lead to a life-threatening asthma attack. (2)

Chest congestion occurs when mucus accumulates in the bronchi and lungs. It can cause a productive cough, which is when a person brings up thick mucus when coughing.

A person may experience a wheezing sound or crackle when breathing due to chest congestion.

Chest congestion can be  a symptom of an underlying infection, such as acute bronchitis. It may also be a symptom of chronic conditions, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
