Hence the nickname scouring rush. Northern Europeans were dining on dulse as far back as 600 A.D. Historically, this herb was used for its tonic effects and solicited for the treatment of both scurvy and constipation. Anciently, the Romans, Greeks and Egyptians considered rosemary a sacred herb. And Greek students wore it when taking exams to help them remember. In the Middle Ages, people wore a rosemary sprig to weddings to bring love and luck to the bride and groom. Sage has been used by some Native American groups as part of their spiritual ceremonies. And today, smudging a room (spreading sage smoke throughout) is believed to help drive out negative energy and promote healing.
